Biosophic Epistemology and Environmental Ethics

My Capstone explores whether humans’ relationship with the planet’s systems is inherently one of domination or if greater reciprocity is possible, and if so, to what degree. This project aims to outline a philosophical pathway for individuals to embody an alternative environmental ethic, moving beyond the common dualistic view of nature as an object of ethics. This process begins with biomimetics, where one views nature as a source of inspiration, regulation, and education, to cultivate an ontological awareness of the self as a unified aspect of the environment. In conjunction with this awareness, a biosophic epistemology can then develop through a reorientation toward the thinking process. Through the sustained application of a biosophic epistemology, I propose that individuals will embody an environmental ethic of immanent ecological coherence, where one’s actions become synchronized and determined by the inward experience of congruence with nature’s active principles.
